Diabetes Part 2 Definition and types

Last month we went over the statistics of diabetes. This month we will cover the definition and types.

“DEFINITION “

Definition: Too much sugar in our blood is Diabetes. Diabetes mellitus refers to a group of diseases that affect how your body uses glucose (sugar). This metabolic imbalance leads to many serious complications and serious health problems.

Our body receives glucose via two basic avenues. We consume sugar in various forms via foods. Remember these are carbohydrates. Almost everything we consume has some level of carbohydrates. Our liver also produces glucagon for use when glucose levels are low in the body.

The glucose is incorporated into the plasma portion of the blood. The plasma is transported to every part of the body so that the glucose can be utilized. To utilize the glucose insulin is required.

Insulin is the key that permits glucose enter the cell so that it can be converted into energy and sustenance.  Without keys glucose cannot be utilized. It is accumulates in the plasma and begins to cause problems

Diabetes Type 1
Type I is usually in children and young adults diagnosed and to be called juvenile diabetes. Only five percent of those with diabetes have this type.In type I, the body does not produce insulin. It does not produce the keys that are needed. Insulin is a hormone needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life.Insulin is created by the pancreas. It is not known why but for some reason we think the body attacks itself and destroys the beta cells that produce insulin. When they are destroyed the sugar level blood sugar rises quickly.

Diabetes Type 2
Type II – Diabetes is a problem with your body that causes blood glucose (sugar) levels rise higher than normal. This is also called hyperglycemia. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes.

If you have type 2 diabetes your body does not use insulin properly. This is called insulin resistance. At first, the pancreas produces extra insulin to make up for it. But, over time, it is unable to keep up and cannot produce enough insulin to maintain their blood glucose at normal levels.

Gestational Diabetes is similar to Type 2. During the hormonal changes of pregnancy and the weight gain, the body becomes more resistant to insulin or the insulin becomes ineffective. Therefore the glucose accumulates in the serum.raising blood sugar levels. The majority of these women will become Type 2 diabetics if they do not watch their weight and care for themselves early on.

Pre-diabetes is very common. It is defined as that point where the glucose level is abnormal but not yet at the level where diabetes is diagnosed. More than one third of the population in the United States mhas pre-diabetes. Yet only 11% are aware that they have it. Those who are pre-diabetic will become diabetic if their weight continues to rise and if they do not care for themselves.
